SUBJECT: Dystopia
GUIDING Q: What is the role of women in dystopian literature?
RATIONALE: I want to study this idea because I was lucky enough to have been born into a society where men and women are now legally equal but in the past this wasn’t the case. It is interesting to me how the roles women play in literature are changing and will continue to change as roles of men and women become less defined and begin to overlap in society.
SUMMARY: Women were once referred to a “property” of men, cared for the children and handled household chores. I know that women were not equal to men in the past therefore the portrayal of women in literature is reflected on the time the books were written. In the past the protagonist or the “hero” was male whereas in today’s society the protagonist is as likely to be female as it would be male.
PREDICTION: I predict that I will find concrete evidence that in literature women are portrayed as a reflection of what is going on in society in regards to equality and women’s rights movements.
